What happened?
OpenAI identified two separate influence operations, one Russian and one Iranian, and banned the accounts involved. According to the company, these campaigns tried to place AI-generated content in real news outlets.
The Russian campaign: "Dark Clark"
The Russian-linked "Dark Clark" operation spread disinformation across Latin America and drew reactions from politicians. OpenAI gave this campaign a 5-out-of-6 threat rating, the first such rating in its reporting history.
The Iranian campaign: "Bogus Bylines"
The Iranian-linked "Bogus Bylines" operation used seven fake journalist identities. Through these identities, nearly 100 articles were published in online outlets worldwide.
Why it matters
Both cases show that AI-powered disinformation can now reach not only social media but also the pages of real news organizations. OpenAI's account bans are the latest example of platforms responding to such operations.
