What was announced?

Mistral AI has launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4, its largest and most capable model to date. The company unofficially calls it "le Chonk." The preview is available today on Mistral Studio, with the weights set to drop by the end of the month.

Technical specs

  • 1 trillion parameters, 49 billion active parameters
  • Natively multimodal (text and vision)
  • Strong performance in coding, agentic workflows and multimodal understanding
  • Multilingual training data spanning more than 160 languages, including every official EU language

Mistral says the model is state-of-the-art among open models on critical enterprise workloads such as cybersecurity, finance and law, and in some domains like visual grounding it surpasses even frontier closed models.

Trained in Europe

ML4 was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own datacenters in Europe, and the preview is served on the same infrastructure. The company says the model will be available across multiple regions worldwide, including a European deployment it operates end-to-end.

Weights coming by end of month

Mistral plans to release the weights by the end of the month. Until then, the model is being red-teamed in real-world settings with cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners and state authorities. The company says it will share further details on the model architecture, additional benchmarks and its post-training methodology.
