Surface Laptop Ultra takes the stage

At its Windows and Surface-focused event in San Francisco, Microsoft shared details about its new Surface Laptop Ultra. The machine is powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark, an Arm-based chip.

Pricing starts at $2,599 for a configuration with an 8-core CPU, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. It goes on sale October 16.

Surface Connect gives way to magnetic USB-C

The laptop replaces Microsoft's long-standing proprietary Surface Connect magnetic charging port with built-in magnetic USB-C charging. That means users can charge it with standard USB-C cables.

A mini PC for developers

Microsoft also announced that the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a mini PC aimed at developers, is available for preorder at $5,999. It is expected to ship in November.

New AI features for Windows

The event also covered updates coming to Windows. "Hybrid Intelligence" features let Copilot use files on your PC to take actions, and a new search experience enables quick actions from the search bar. Microsoft said Muse is also coming to Windows.

Why it matters

An Arm-based Windows laptop built for local AI now has a clear price and date, signaling where Microsoft is taking both hardware and Windows software.
