Copilot can now reach your files

At its Windows and Surface event, Microsoft showed off an upgrade to its Copilot AI system that gives it access to local files on your PC and the ability to take actions across the operating system.

What is "Hybrid Intelligence"?

Microsoft calls this idea "Hybrid Intelligence." The premise is that apps and tools rely on a mix of local and cloud AI models to accomplish tasks efficiently — some work runs on the device, some in the cloud.

A tax-filing demo on stage

To demonstrate how Hybrid Intelligence works, Jacob Andreou, Microsoft's EVP of Copilot, walked through a video demo on stage asking the company's Autopilot tool to help with filing taxes. Andreou said he had received an email from his accountant and asked Autopilot to get her what she needed.

What it means

The move pushes Copilot beyond a question-answering assistant toward an agent that can act across the OS. Local file access and automated actions are likely to fuel privacy and security debates.
