What happened?

Microsoft and Japan dismantled a cyber network operating in more than 150 countries that sent over 1 billion scam messages in total. More than 20,000 accounts were disabled as part of the operation.

Why it matters

Scam messages aim to steal users' credentials and money by directing them to fake links. Such networks often operate across multiple countries at once, so action by a single country is not enough.

Scope of the operation

The network spanned more than 150 countries. Through joint work by Microsoft and Japanese authorities, the infrastructure was disrupted and thousands of accounts were shut down. Details of the operation and which countries were affected have not yet been clarified.
