What happened?

According to Futurism, Meta is refusing to remove AI-generated videos depicting physical child abuse on Facebook. The report says thousands of similar videos remain on the platform, with more uploaded every day.

Meta's response

Futurism says it reported 19 accounts to Meta, but the company left them live for more than 24 hours and did not respond to a request for comment. A previously removed account was reportedly reinstated and then vanished again, with Meta not explaining why.

What the videos show

The report describes scenes including a baby roasting in an oven, a toddler pushed down stairs, and a girl tied to a tree and struck with a cast iron pan. Some clips show children beaten with belts and ropes or locked inside washing machines and dog kennels. Other videos depict Black children being beaten by teachers in classroom settings.

Moderation and resources

Meta has pointed to clips ending with an adult helping the child as justification for the videos, according to the report. Futurism argues that despite Meta's massive AI investments, the company is not even using text captions to flag the content.
