Publishing on the Play Store is changing
Google is adapting the Play Store's publishing rules for the AI era. Under the company's new approach, Android apps created by users with tools like AI Studio can be distributed on the store even if they don't write code.
A Google account will be enough
According to the report, the requirements for publishing an app are being simplified: a developer's only need will be a Google account. That ties "vibe coding" — AI-assisted app creation guided by natural language — directly to store distribution.
Recommendations are being updated too
The change isn't limited to publishing. Google is also making adjustments to the Play Store's recommendation system, aiming to rebuild both the creation and discovery sides of the store for the AI era.
What it means
The move aims to take app development out of a process that requires technical knowledge and open it to a wider audience. At the same time, it raises questions about app quality, security and moderation on the store.
