What the new model brings
Google announced Nano Banana 2.1, its new image generation model. It runs on Gemini 3.6 Flash and, in some benchmark comparisons, outperforms the company's previous Pro version while costing less.
Benchmarks vs. real-world use
The picture isn't entirely clear, though. The previous Nano Banana version also scored well in tests, while the Pro model often produced better images in practice. That suggests benchmark results and day-to-day experience can diverge.
Why it matters
The balance between cost and quality in image generation is decisive for both developers and end users. Google promising similar or better results with a cheaper model could make image generation more accessible.
