Top rank in CDC evaluation
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that Google's science AI model delivered the best results in forecasting flu-related hospital admissions. In other words, the model outperformed other approaches at predicting how hard seasonal flu waves would hit hospitals.
Why it matters
Anticipating flu-related hospitalizations ahead of time is critical for hospitals planning beds, staff and intensive care capacity. The fact that the CDC carried out such an evaluation shows that AI forecasts are being taken into account in official public health processes.
Science-focused AI
Google's AI models built for science are used in research and forecasting tasks. This result shows that these models also work in real-world applications involving health data.
