How cuffless measurement works
Google Research has built an AI model that detects signs of high blood pressure using only data from a standard smartwatch's pulse and motion sensors. The method does not require a cuff wrapped around the arm.
Study results
In a 196-person study, the model reached a 65.8 percent detection rate. That outperformed traditional in-office measurement.
Already in use
The method is already live in the Google Health app. However, the company stresses that it does not replace a formal diagnosis; the results are not a substitute for a doctor's assessment.
Why it matters
High blood pressure often progresses without symptoms. Wearables catching such signals offers a practical path to early awareness, though it is no replacement for the medical diagnosis process.
