Coding on the device

Microsoft announced that GitHub Copilot can now write code with on-device AI on new Windows PCs. On-device means the AI model runs directly on the computer rather than in the cloud, which can mean faster responses and less data sharing.

Tools in a sandbox

Another highlight in the announcement is that tools run in a sandbox. A sandbox keeps code and agents isolated from the rest of the system, improving safety.

Who it's for

The feature is aimed at developers, but its significance goes beyond the Windows ecosystem: Microsoft is continuing its strategy of putting AI features at the center of the operating system. Local AI support on new Windows PCs is one concrete step in that strategy.

Note that the details are limited to what Microsoft shared (supported hardware, availability date, pricing).
