Congress requests records
Democratic members Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia of the House judiciary and oversight committees sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking him to preserve records of his interactions with AI chatbots. According to the letter viewed by Politico, the request covers "any prompts" given to tools like Grok while "carrying out your constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties," as well as the chatbots' responses.
The Venezuela claim
The letter was prompted by reports that Trump relied on Grok to plan the January 3 attack on Caracas, which reportedly killed 100 people. Raskin and Garcia allege that Trump used Grok to "opine on how Venezuelans would respond to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro" and then ordered the military operation without congressional authorization based on the bot's response.
White House response
A White House official told Politico that the "White House preserves all required records in accordance with the law." Democrats also requested a briefing by November 11 on the president's use of large language models for executive decision-making.
Why it matters
The development widens the debate over accountability when AI chatbots are used in government decisions. Whether the logs will be preserved and shared with Congress remains unclear.
