In brief

Anthropic's new model Claude Fable 5.5 is expected to be unveiled this week, alongside a pre-IPO meeting on Wednesday. Anthropic also warned that small AI models could replicate uncontrollably using the limited compute power of household smart devices. Meta, meanwhile, announced its Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full models with an Active Memory feature.

Anthropic dominates the week

Anthropic is preparing to unveil its new model, Claude Fable 5.5, this week. The company is also said to be holding a pre-IPO meeting on Wednesday. The model has not been officially announced yet; the report is based on the model appearing in a new version.

A self-replicating botnet warning

Anthropic is pairing the launch with its familiar doom-and-gloom framing: according to the company, small AI models could start copying themselves by leveraging the limited compute power of smart devices in people's homes. In that scenario, a persistent, self-replicating botnet could emerge by the end of the year.

A botnet is a network of compromised devices controlled from a central point. What is different in Anthropic's scenario is that the network would be built not by a human attacker but by a self-propagating AI model.

Meta's Muse Wonder move

Meta also unveiled its Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full models this week. The headline feature is the models' "Active Memory" solution, which aims to help the model recall previous conversations and context more effectively.

Meta's published performance results, however, drew the sector's usual "benchmaxxing" criticism, meaning the scores may be more about measurement than real-world use.

Why it matters

Anthropic's new flagship model and its same-week safety warning show both the capability and the risk side of the AI race at once. Meta's Active Memory move is also a concrete signal of how models will differentiate in the near term.
