What happened?
Chinese technology startup Langdao Silex unveiled its self-developed EUV light source prototype at the 26th China International Industry Fair in Shanghai. Named "FlintNano LPP-OXXO," the system represents one of the most critical components of EUV lithography machines.
Localization claim
According to the company, most core components were developed through independent R&D, with a localization rate of roughly 90%. EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography is the most advanced technology used in modern chip production, and Dutch firm ASML has long been the sole supplier in this field.
Why caution is warranted
Unveiling a prototype does not mean China can operate independently of ASML. Mass production is not expected for another 3-5 years, and even that is considered an optimistic timeline. U.S. trade restrictions that ASML has to navigate further complicate the picture.
Why it matters
The EUV light source is one of the hardest and most expensive steps in chip manufacturing. China's effort to build a domestic alternative is a strategic move that could affect the global chip supply chain in the long run. For now, however, it remains a prototype, with a long road ahead before commercial-scale production.
