What happened?

Anthropic announced it will invest $150 million over three years in the Genesis Mission, a US federal initiative to accelerate scientific and technological discovery through AI. With the funding, the company will make Claude available to more than 15 agencies involved in the mission.

Who benefits?

Agencies covered by the funding include NASA, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Anthropic first announced its partnership with the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Genesis Mission last December; since then, Claude has been brought to scientists across the national laboratories.

The three-year plan

  • Provide Claude, Claude Code and API credits to several hundred Genesis Mission research projects.
  • Work closely with agencies on top science priorities such as fusion energy and quantum computing.
  • Offer training, onboarding and technical support to scientists, and help agencies new to the mission get their first projects running.

The bigger picture

The commitment is part of Anthropic's broader effort to support scientific research. Earlier this year the company launched Claude Science, an AI workbench for researchers, and opened 10,000 free and discounted Claude seats for academic scientists. It also kicked off a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a shared specification for AI agents to safely operate lab instruments.
