The Fire name is gone

Amazon has retired the Fire name it used for its tablets for 15 years. The new devices are called Alexa Tablets and bear almost no resemblance to anything Amazon has shipped before.

Two goals

Amazon says the new lineup is designed to do two things: bring Alexa Plus to the center of your whole computing life, and be straight-up excellent tablets.

The biggest change: Android

The most important thing about the software is that these tablets run Android — full, Google Play-supported Android with access to all the apps. There are plenty of preloaded Amazon apps, plus built-in ways to quickly reach Prime Video content or shop.

Why it matters

By moving from Fire's closed ecosystem to full Android, Amazon is positioning the new tablets as a stronger rival to the iPad. Putting Alexa Plus at the heart of the device is part of the company's push to make its AI assistant central to everyday computing.
